SummaryThe goal of the proposed study, which closes a gap in the European region with regard to scientific work and usable health policy data, is to evaluate the efficacy of psychiatric treatment in a day hospital setting in five centres in five European countries, i.e. U.K., Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The main hypothesis of the study is that day hospital treatment of general psychiatric patients is as effective as complete hospital care. To reach this goal, patients receiving psychiatric treatment in either a day hospital or a completely inpatient setting at the five centres will be studied in a temporally parallels randomised experimental pre-post design. An observation period of 18 months will allow for the evaluation of persistent effects of the therapy in either setting. Several related outcome criteria are compiled (e.g. psychopathology, normative needs for care; quality of life, subjective needs for care, stress upon closest reference person); a focal point constitutes a cost-effectiveness analysis. Results of the study constitute a relevant health policy contribution to the evaluation of a treatment setting expanding in the area of psychiatry.
